Allocating more RAM to Minecraft is one of the most commonly cited ways of improving the performance of Minecraft on your computer. Furthermore it is the best way to combat the, amongst others. In the past it was slightly more difficult to allocate more memory to Minecraft, however in recent updates to the Minecraft launcher it has become much easier. Below I’ve outlined the easy, 5-step process to allocating more RAM to Minecraft. Open up your Minecraft launcher, but don’t log in. Click the Edit Profile button on the bottom left of your screen. In this new menu click the JVM Arguments box.
In the text box to the right of this menu you will notice a box that will say something like “ -Xmx1G” by default. If you are running the there will be no limit to the amount of RAM you can allocate, other than the amount that your machine has installed. I always advise that you stay below the total amount of RAM that your computer by a small amount, though. How to Allocate More RAM to Minecraft in Older Versions Whilst the following fix is outdated thanks to updates to the Minecraft launcher I thought I’d add it here for any of you running older versions of Minecraft, for whatever reason.
This method is a little bit more difficult then in new versions, but if you follow the below steps then you shouldn’t have any problems allocating RAM to Minecraft. Move your Minecraft.exe file into a new, empty folder. Open up Notepad. Write java -Xmx2048M -Xms2048M -jar “minecraft.exe” in this text file. Save this file as Minecraft.bat and save it in your new folder. Run Minecraft as normal and check the amount of Minecraft allocated by pressing F3 in game. Note: In Step 3 the value “2048” represents 2048MB (or 2GB) of RAM and can be changed to be more or less where applicable.
If you are experiencing issues with this method it is usually due to the “minecraft.exe” part of your.bat file. To alleviate any problems you are experiencing you will need to try:. Removing the quotation marks around “minecraft.exe”.
Change minecraft.exe to javaw.exe and/or java.exe. Add Pause to the next line of your.bat file. Finally, if Minecraft still does not start up properly or extra memory hasn’t been allocated then you can change your entire.bat file to C: Windows System32 javaw.exe” -Xmx2048M -Xms2048M -jar “Minecraft.exe”, although you might still need to test around with the three above bullet points. It is also worth noting at this point that allocating Minecraft more RAM through this method will no longer work for new versions of Minecraft, and you should use the first method instead.
